Sega CD - 20 years (and two days) old!

So I was browsing IGN a couple of nights ago when I saw the article proclaiming that the Sega CD was 20 years old.  I immediately went and hit up a few websites to confirm that, and sure enough - it is.  It is funny, because as I get older and the annual birthdays come around, people tease me asking me if I am starting to feel old.  I reply that no - my birthdays do not make me feel old, but specific birthdays that my kids have do.  This year was a doozy on that front too, as my oldest turned 16, my son turned 13 and my youngest hit 10.  Driving age, teenager, double digits.

Well, now video game systems are starting to have the same effect on me.  See, I recall very clearly when I got the Sega CD.  I have posted about the Genesis I got from my uncle years ago, and it was definitely a favorite system of mine.  Almost every console has a handful of games that really resonated well with me, and become the games I immediately think of when I reflect back on that console.  That being said - there were a lot of Genesis games that immediately spring to mind for me, so when an opportunity came up to 'add' to my Genesis and pick up the Sega CD peripheral back then, I did so right away.

I actually do not know anyone else who owned one of these, except my best friend Randy growing up.  He had one, but only nabbed a couple of games for it like Night Trap and Sewer Shark.  Generally speaking, there was a trend of trying to put actual video footage to the games on these systems, often with grainy, diluted results.  The above two titles were perfect examples of this, and a pair of games that I really never cared for all that much.

I did however, have a handful of games for my Sega CD that I actually quite enjoyed.  Lunar was probably the best known IP to spring from that platform, though Working Designs also released a slightly more futuristic RPG called Vay that I quite enjoyed as well.

There were some good strategy titles for those who are interested in such games - the two that stand out to me were Shining Force CD and Dark Wizard.  Both of these were games I really enjoyed playing.  I had a handful of other titles as well, such as Spider-man vs Kingpin and Sonic the Hedgehog CD.  All in all, I know the Sega CD was short-lived and not particularly well-liked upon release, but I definitely found some worthwhile titles to play on it back then.  Anyone else out there by chance have any experience with this guy?  Like me, does the age of some of these games and consoles start to make you feel JUST a bit older?  Thanks for dropping by!

  1. Never had one but got to play a few games on it through emulation. I finished Sonic CD and didn't like it much at all. Snatcher is a superb visual novel and one that should be played by everyone even if the final chapter that was added on was a bit week. Also I love Robo Aleste, not as good as Musha on the megadrive but still great. It didn't have a lot of games on it but there's enough excellent titles to make it worthwhile.

  2. I haven't actually gone back to play anything on it in ages. I still have it, and my Sega Genesis as well, but I don't think I've spun anything up on it in ages. I was actually thinking about doing so recently so I could compare Lunar on it to my copy on the PSP soon.

  3. Never owned one and considered getting it when I started collecting Genesis games in the late 90s but never found a unit in good enough condition, or more likely, I probably didn't try hard enough.

I have to say I am a bit conflicted by the SegaCD. The nostalgia is there. The early to mid 90s is really still my golden time for games. However, Back then, It was a kind of cool toy the rich neighbour had that I couldn't have so I despised it on that level. But I guess looking back, especially with hindsight and AVGN's hilarious review of it and the many awful games on it, it was probably better I didn't force my parents to buy me one.

  4. The only Sega home console I had was the Dreamcast, and my brother had the Game Gear. I think only one friend had a Sega console, but I don't think it was the Sega CD, I think it was the Genesis... maybe. Everybody else seemed to be Nintendo, then PlayStation owners.

Do some of these make me feel just a bit older....yup, especially during this last year. "Really, this is turning 20?! 15!?" Where does the time go.........

  5. LOL - See, as soon as I first read about this guy coming out, I started doing extra odd jobs like yard work for neighbors to save up, so I pretty much snagged it as soon as it came out. It was an interesting precursor to the Sega Saturn, which a buddy of mine picked up when it came out. This was my first run at CD style games.

    Thanks for dropping in!

  6. ROFL@where did the time go - exactly!

And as for the consoles, I was kind of lucky. A lot of my friends were big into gaming, and as a result I got exposed to a pretty wide variety of consoles and games when I was younger, without necessarily having to sink much money into the hobby. Don't get me wrong - what money I had definitely went into the hobby, but I was lucky to be able to sample a lot of stuff along the way

  7. I did have a Mega Drive (Genesis), but never owned a Sega-CD, although over the years I have been able to play Sonic CD and Lunar: The Silver Star which are both fantastic games.

  8. They really both were fantastic. Lunar with its music and cut scenes just felt so immerse for the time, as well. Thanks for dropping by!
