Dear Readers, Each year at this time we present our games of the year lists in five categories. Enjoy and feel free to peruse previous years in the static link at the top of the page.

Omega Quintet takes center stage on the PS4 in spring of 2015

Well, we are about to hit a four day weekend here in the US for Thanksgiving. If you need a reason to be thankful for some games this year, take a look at our earlier article from noon today. Otherwise, we plan to go all radio silent until Monday. Before we leave however, we wanted to tell you about Idea Factory International's upcoming Omega Quintet.

Thankful for these games in 2014 - Gaming Thoughts

For those of us in the United States, Thanksgiving weekend is upon us. While I like to think of this holiday as the three important F's (Food, Football and a Four day weekend), a few of us on the team thought it would be fun to look back on what games in 2014 made us thankful. Some are the usual suspects like Dragon Age or Call of Duty, but some surprises like Spacebase and Dungeons of the Endless made the cut as well.

LittleBigPlanet 3 - PS4 Review

I have always gotten along with Sackboy. He's cute. He's fun. He has great adventures. Still, as far as PlayStation mascots go, he seems to be losing a little bit of that 'something special' with each release. It does not help that diluted experiences like his Move-based adventure or racing game proved to be more distraction than truly entertaining, but while part of me really wanted to love LittleBigPlanet 3, I found myself just liking it instead.

Energizer 2X Charging System for Xbox One - Hardware Review

As the 2014 holiday season is right around the corner and now that the Xbox One has been out for about a year now, accessories of all shapes and sizes can be had from various manufacturers. Ever since I picked up the Xbox One I have been using good ol' AA batteries to power my controllers and it was not until recently that I was provided the Energizer Xbox One Charge System available from PDP (www.pdp.com).  Now, some of you may think I am bonkers for not picking up a play and charge kit like this, and I likely am, but I was doing fine with the AA batteries; after all, I have a young daughter so every single thing she gets requires some sort of battery. In other words, I am fairly well stocked with them.

NHL 15 - Xbox One Review

I was recently speaking with my brother about sports games and I was trying to determine what the last sport-based video game I had played was. Depending on who you are and how you see racing games it would be Forza Motorsports 5 however, I do not believe that the Forza games are "sports;" they are a way of life that must be taken, so the Forza titles do not count. That would leave The Golf Club and before it, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2012 and prior to that, it was the original Tiger Woods game. We then got onto the subject of the NHL game franchise and it dawned on the two of us that the last hockey game we seriously played was an NHL title for the original Xbox (and before that, was that Wayne Gretzky game for the Nintendo 64) so it has been some time since I got my mitts on a hockey title for some real in-depth playing.

Evolve shares alpha numbers and reveals Caira

Evolve seems to be one of those titles everyone has been talking about since its impressive showing earlier this year. Evolve was watched for more than 2,000,000 hours during its four day Big Alpha test. Those are some pretty substantial numbers that indicate this game still has plenty of momentum.

Lenovo Erazer X315 Desktop - Hardware Review

Lenovo is a brand name that is commonly associated with top-quality business computers and in the last few years they have been silently pushing a new lineup of computers; gaming computers. While their business and personal use computers have always been powerful, well-built, and affordable, gamers have always want 'just a little more power' in their machines. Some years ago, Lenovo took their Y-lineup of home-use laptops and started putting more powerful components in them and with their success, they quietly began manufacturing a desktop lineup that was both powerful and extremely affordable.

Samsung U28UD590D 4K Ultra High Definition Monitor - Hardware Review

Samsung. The name exudes quality. Say it with me, "Samsung." From their Galaxy phones and tablets to their absolutely stunning televisions (every television I have owned in the last ten years has been a Samsung) and monitors to their amazing laptops, Samsung is one of the best, if not the best manufacturer of high-quality electronics. My first computer that I built back in the 90's had a Samsung SyncMaster CRT monitor that I used all the way up until I purchased my first LCD monitor. I have long been a fan of Samsung as their electronics have been of the utmost quality and have lasted me longer than nearly any other electronic device that I have owned so I am confident when I say that they are built to last. In fact my current 'gaming rig' is a Samsung Chronos 7 that is a veritable workhorse that can still play a majority of current games at high settings without suffering any hiccups and it is nearing on two years old.

Tales of Hearts R - PS Vita Review

While Tales of Xillia 2 was released a few months ago, and at the time had been the best looking Tales to date, with Tales of Heart R that is no longer the case. The most impressive graphical update to Tales of Heart R lies with the animated scenes as they are absolutely stunning. This is to be expected given the animation studio for Tales of Hearts R was Production I.G. a studio that is behind some of the best anime available to date. A few of Production I.G.'s works include Psycho Pass, a stunning cyber-thriller, Ghost in the Shell, Eden of the East, Sengoku Basara, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, The Mobile Police Patlabor Series/Movies and not to mention, Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion.

Xbox One: A look back at its first year - Gaming Thoughts

Releasing just one week after the PlayStation 4 did, the Microsoft Xbox One had a bit of an uphill battle right out of the gates. A disastrous E3 got Microsoft's console off on the wrong foot, but credit to Microsoft for making some deft pivots before the Xbox One released that put it on more even footing with the PlayStation 4. Still, it cost more and customers were unconvinced by the bundled Kinect. I actually felt that the Xbox One release library was stronger than that of the PlayStation 4, though neither was among the best release lineups in gaming history. Taking a look back over the first year of the Xbox One's lifespan, I want to share my thoughts on what went right, what went wrong and to shake my magic 8-ball and try to figure out what the future holds.

Buzz Aldrin's Space Program Manager - PC Review

I love space, it is, dare I say it, "the final frontier." Imagination is a powerful process (or better yet, tool) and when tied together with an unknowable expanse like the inky black void that our little blue planet is floating around in, the possibilities are endless. Traveling, much less understanding the infinite blackness that surrounds The Milky Way is impossible, but a lucky few were able to set foot on Luna (the Roman name for the Moon); one of those men was Dr. Buzz Aldrin. In recent years, Dr. Aldrin has voiced or appeared in various television shows, movies, and video games such as The Big Bang Theory, Space Brothers, and Mass Effect 3 and now, has a video game, Buzz Aldrin's Space Program Manager: Road to the Moon.

Pure Pool - Xbox One Review

I have been a big proponent of pool or billiards since I was about 8 or 9 years old as a close friend from down the road had a pool table in their basement. Her and I would hang out for hours after school or on the weekends playing pool, or in the early days, whipping the different balls around the table. It was not until we hit 12 or 13 that we started really playing pool the way it was meant to be played and even to this day her and I can meet up at some dive that has a pool table and just play for hours at a time. It is, outside of video games, one of my passions that I have kept up over then last 20 years. There is something about the felt that covers the table, the beaten pleather pockets, and the scuffed  up rack that simply pulls me back to those good ol' days of just being a kid hanging out with friends from around the neighborhood.

Gunspell - PC Review

Gunspell tries to bridge genres in similar fashion to other titles like Puzzle Quest and Gyromancer. On a technical level, Gunspell succeeds in blending RPG mechanics with a match-three puzzle game. Some of these mechanics work better than others as Gunspell by and large still feels like a mobile game that was simply ported to the PC. With a bit more time and effort the end result could have been something very interesting, but as it stands now it is a decent enough title that feels too similar to other games that have 'done it better'.

Fraps - PC Review

I struggle to remember when it is that I first became aware of Fraps though I believe it was around the CounterStrike 1.4 release, which was in early 2002 (though I may be wrong). Personally I did not use Fraps until a few years later, when I was fairly large into the CAL-I and CAL-M leagues for CounterStrike 1.6. We would use Fraps to record scrimmages and gameplay then review them for match time. In the ten-plus years both the recording technologies as well as the internet have changed greatly, especially with the advent of Twitch, Let's Play videos on YouTube, and the ever-growing montage market. With the popularity of capture devices and YouTube/Twitch gamers showing off their skills or walking gamers through difficult games, there are more and more recording applications available on the market, does the godfather of the game recording world still have what it takes after a decade of success?

Magic 2015 - Garruk's Revenge Expansion - PC Review

Have you found yourself thinking “golly, I sure had a hearty helping of Magic the Gathering from this years Magic 2015 release on Steam, but I could sure go for a nice digestif to wash it all down?” Well Stainless Games and Wizards of the Coast saw that longing look in your eye as they casually slide the dessert menu to you. On special tonight, a $5 expansion pack called Garruk’s Revenge. Promising 5 new campaign levels, dozens of new cards, and a new way of unlocking boosters, it is a mighty tempting offer. But does this offering put the cherry on top, or does it feel like a clown throwing a pie in your face?

F1 2014 - PS3 Review

I have long been a fan of Codemasters' titles as they have had a successful history of releasing quality racing titles, from the stunning Grid titles to DiRT. On top of some of the most enjoyable racing games, Codemasters has also brought us the sorely underrated Operation Flashpoint games as well as the wonderful Overlord franchise. Given that Codemasters develops some of my favorite racing titles like DiRT and Grid, and they have been developing the F1 series for five years now and they have long been the "it" studio for all of your F1 goodness and it looks to continue the trend with F1 2014. While this is the first F1 game that I have played since the Super Nintendo's F1 Pole Position, I am looking forward to what these masters of racing games can bring me.

Tesoro Excalibur G7NL LED Backlit Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - Hardware Review

I grew up using mechanical keyboards as membrane-based keyboards had not yet become a popular alternative due to ease of manufacturing and a decidedly quieter working environment. When I built my first computer back in the mid-90's I picked up a membrane-based keyboard from a local computer shop for near on $50, and this was a basic, 104-key PS/2 keyboard. Nothing special, just a simple keyboard and I used it for years until the USB-based keyboards became the "it" thing. Along with the newer connection, USB-based keyboards also brought with them multimedia controls, allowing users to play/switch music or video tracks, change the volume and even assign favorites keys.

Afterglow Kral PS4 Wireless Headset - Hardware Review

To put it bluntly, this headset is great overall. I have a hate/hate relationship with headphone and headset cables, so being able to cut the wire so to speak is awesome from my standpoint. My personal headphones are a medium range Hesh that get the job done, but far too often I have found myself damaging the cables (even when replacing them with the proprietary ones). I have had issues with cables on wired console headsets as well (though they do tend to last longer because I am sitting for the most part and not walking about the house or outside like I am with my Hesh headphones).

Digimon All-Star Rumble - PS3 Review

I grew up on Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! and still play the latter online today. Digimon sort of fell into that same area, but was never quite as interesting to me. I followed along now and again, but the property never reached must-have status for me, despite a generally fond impression of it all. There had been talk in some corners about new Digimon games coming to the west - unfortunately the one we got, All-Star Rumble, is fun but mud puddle shallow. That is not to say you cannot splash around in it and have a good time, but it runs out of content and tricks fairly quickly.

PlayStation 4: A look back at its first year - Gaming Thoughts

With the Sony PlayStation 4 turning one year old tonight at midnight, I thought we would take a look back at what the console got right, where it has missed and also take a look at where it is headed. Given its relatively close release date to the Xbox One, it is inevitable that these two competing consoles will get compared to one another frequently and many people have their favorite. I will say that my PlayStation 4 seems to get more use than my Xbox One, but this has more to do with location than a bias for or against one system over the other (my PlayStation 4 is in the den, while my Xbox One is in the living room - which is the television more frequently being used by the rest of the family).

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - PC Review

In The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, the player takes on the role of Paul Prospero, a faceless narrator with strange powers and a gravelly voice. He calls to mind the hard-boiled PI of noir fiction, but the actor’s delivery of his lines sounds more like Watchmen’s Rorschach to me, in tone if not in content. Paul has been summoned to the countryside by a letter from a boy named Ethan, and it's soon apparent that there are secrets to be uncovered and hidden details to be found all over the landscape.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance - Retro Reflections

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance introduced me to console action role playing games. It must have been a memorable experience to play this game back in 2001, when the PS2 was still young· I bought it later but still was impressed by its appealing graphics, epic music and highly addictive action.

Despite its name the game is not connected with the monumental Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 on the pc. The plot, dialogue and characters are not nearly as developed, the combat system is less deep, you control only one character, the world is smaller and your progress is linear. As in all action role playing games the story is mostly an excuse to leave the safety of town, wander in the wilderness and kill hundreds of monsters to gain experience and become stronger.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - 16 different DLC's... all for free

DLC is a controversial point for a lot of gamers. When it first began, it was seen as a great chance to extend an experience with a particular game. Early on titles like Fallout and Elder Scrolls: Oblivion gave us a chance to hang with favorite titles just a little longer. However, oftentimes now DLC is seen as an almost dirty word. Some feel that the developers are holding back content they might have initially published if they were not instead trying to nickle and dime gamers. So this latest announcement by CD Projeckt Red is pretty cool in that they will have a variety of content without restrictions.

Randal's Monday - PC Review

Randall’s Monday, by Nexus Game Studio, is a point and click adventure game that channels Sam & Max, Clerks, and about a thousand pop culture references to movies, gaming and all things geek.  It tries very hard to convince you of certain things, such as that it is a great game that is outright hilarious at points, but in the end it becomes an exercise in repetition and attempting to try every item in combination with every other item to progress.

Cube World - Better With a Partner

Cube World is something that I've had my eye on for a good while now. So when we got Fight the Dragon I figured why not get this at the same time? They are similar in the sense that they are both hack and slash RPGs but that is about where the similarities end. Instead of diving into maps, players explore randomly generated procedural open worlds. Whether attacking this alone, or with a friend, its one hell of a world to see.

Magic 2015 - Duels of the Planeswalkers + Garruk's Revenge - Xbox One Review

Magic: The Gathering is one of those hobbies of mine that dates back quite a few years. Most of our nights playing Dungeons & Dragons started (or ended) with some hands of Magic being played among us (when we were not playing rounds of Mario Kart 64 and GoldenEye). I have started and stopped over the years, adding cards and selling some along the way. The fundamental game remains the same, despite some rules clarifications (goodbye Interrupts) and new mechanics (hello Planeswalkers). Magic 2015 - Duels of the Planeswalkers is a mostly faithful recreation of the game that does several things right over prior years, but also stumbles in a few places as well.

Power Rangers Super Megaforce - 3DS Review

Games based on existing IPs are always a gamble. Sometimes they have such great backstory or characters that development teams are then able to run with successfully (Batman, some of the Transformers games immediately come to mind). Others are absolutely horrid, broken, buggy titles that feel incredibly rushed (just about every non-Spider-man and Batman superhero game). Most tend to fall into a middle range where they feel slightly undercooked. Playable, fun if you check your brain at the door, but hardly qualify as good use of their license. Power Rangers Super Megaforce falls squarely into this category as it fails to do anything terribly new with the source material or innovate gaming in any particular way - but it is not a bad game either and can actually serve to help kill several hours of time on your 3DS.

Probably the biggest disappointment to be had here is that there was actually quite a bit of potential to be had. A handful of systems were put into place to help make Power Rangers Super Megaforce slightly more than just a simple brawling game. If just a bit more time and care had gone into these systems, the end result could have been an addictive title worth coming back to repeatedly. As it stands, it is basically fun filler in small bursts. Kids will probably get more out of the experience than teens or adults who would like a bit more to sink their teeth into. Brawlers are a somewhat simple genre by nature, and the team at 7th Chord seems to understand the need for a bit more substance, it just is not quite there yet. Still, this is latest iteration in the series and a more enjoyable experience than the earlier games, so it feels like the franchise is actually moving in the right direction.

Just Dance 2015 - Xbox One Review

Since the Nintendo Wii was released, and later the Microsoft Kinect, dance games have been quite popular in the home. Prior to motion controlling, the only real option for dance-related games was Dance Dance Revolution. I recall watching kids half my age just crush hi-scores and nail perfect after perfect on some of these songs and being a bit in awe of them; you see, I am fairly terrible at any form of rhythmic moving so I always stayed away from dance or anything resembling dance. When motion controls became a "thing" it was only natural for dance games to come to the home consoles which allowed folks like me to go through and "dance" in the safety of our own homes and away from prying eyes.

Lords of the Fallen - PC Review

When I first saw Lords of the Fallen at E3 I was hooked; I had to have more. Here is this crazy, heavily armored and rough-looking man named Harkyn that has a giant hammer and a big shiny shield trudging his way through a frozen landscape with snow and wind whipping around him. As he continues to push on the ground rumbles and this massive thing emerges and all this armored gentleman does is hunker down, raise his shield, and begin a battle. As more content about Lords of the Fallen was released, the more interested I became; utilizing a loose "class" system, you can choose between three different primary styles of play.

You can choose the stout warrior, a fighter of great constitution that stands fast and takes punishment with his giant shield and his longsword. There is the rogue-like character, nimble, lightly armored and armed to the teeth with fast blades. Finally there is the cleric, a holy warrior whose faith, shield and massive mace are his weapons against the demonic hoard that is ravaging the planet. Which of these classes will you assume as you work to save the world? Does Lords of the Fallen stand toe-to-toe with perhaps the best Action RPG of all time, Dark Souls II? Read on to learn more.

Lords of the Fallen is a gorgeous game with stunning volumetric lighting, a healthy dose of particles such as dust and weather patterns, and goodness the models are top notch. Take Harkyn's starting Cleric gear, the flowing cloak shows some wear but not so much to be ratty and torn; his pauldrons have these tassels that swing and sway when you move or when the wind blows (which it is blowing a lot in some areas) and the steel of his armor looks like it has seen better days. The battered steel and fading cloak are held together by well-used leather straps and the cloth that shows under the breastplate and pauldrons looks suitably used; and that is just the armor.

DarkEnd - PC Review

On a general principle I have two adjectives that get attached when I am called a gamer. The first is that I am more often than not being called a niche gamer by most of the people I know. Comes with the territory of playing Nippon Ichi, Compile Hearts, a fair amount of indies and RPG Makers among others. The second thing that is said is that I am a sadistic gamer. Dark Souls 2? Took the day after it came out because lets be honest, why take the day it comes out off when stores only open at certain hours? Taking the day after means you can get home after work, slap in the game and play until you can’t play anymore. I swear that was not twenty hours of gaming in two days. My point with all of this? DarkEnd falls into the both categories and it was one hell of a dungeon crawl. Seriously. Who puts poison on all the monsters on the first level? Brilliant!

Players should be wary when venturing into the terrible lands of the DarkEnd. These lands are out for your life. Now while I say that the Souls games are sadistic, to a degree they have nothing on just about any of the Shin Megami Tensei series where just having a single elemental weakness can be the end of your entire party. This is where DarkEnd fits into that form of equation. What does this mean overall? Challenges are good and knowing that the game over screen is just ahead makes decisions that much more important. One of those most important of decisions is trying to figure out how far you should venture before turning back. Miscalculate and you will most certainly perish. Braving the DarkEnd does not come without a certain levels of choice. However be warned, once chosen there is no going back.

Majestic NIghts - PC Preview

Conspiracy theories can be an interesting thought exercise or an all-consuming obsession. But they can rarely be verified. What if there is a group of individuals with all the evidence required to unwrap such debates as MK Ultra, the JFK assassination, or the moon landings? Majestic Nights, the upcoming episodic game from developer Epiphany Games, is built on the idea of a shadowy cabal holding all these secrets, and the intrigue and deceit that surrounds them. I had the chance to play Chapter 0, a small introductory vignette to the 6 episode arc set to release at the end of the month.

Set in a grimy 1980’s alternate reality with comic book aesthetics, Majestic Nights has you controlling a mysterious character known simply as Cardholder. With clear, though dubious, ties to the greater US intelligence system, Cardholder appears dead set on unraveling some mysteries and coverups. This short initial chapter focuses on the moon landing and the search for a bizarro Stanley Kubric for questioning.

Xbox One Modded Controller (Steel) by Evil Controllers - Hardware Review

Elite Dangerous - PC Preview

Most of our readers that have been around are likely aware that I am a bit of a space junkie; I gravitate towards any title that takes place in space whether it is a 4X strategy title like Distant Worlds: Universe or Galactic Civilizations III to titles like X: Rebirth 2.0 and Starpoint Gemini 2, I love the setting. Some of my favorite childhood memories was of me sliding behind the couch at night to watch Star Trek: The Next Generation (behind the couch because it was after my bedtime; I was hiding, though I suspect my parents knew I was back there). Movies like the Star Wars trilogy, the Star Trek movies, The Last Starfighter, Enemy Mine, and other space-based goodness defined my childhood; while young my older brother introduced me to Robotech, which to this day is still an obsession of mine.
