Until Dawn - Play Time

This morning we shared our review of Until Dawn for the PlayStation 4. In this spoiler-ific article, I share out gameplay from the first ten minutes or so of the game. It was my second time playing through the introduction, so I purposely made different decisions, just to see how they would play out.

Until Dawn - PS4 Review

Until Dawn works despite a handful of fairly significant issues. If you have ever watched a horror movie and thought (or shouted aloud): "Why would you do that?!" - well now you get your chance to see if you would fare any better within the confines of the story. The end result is a tense experience with excellent production values that is worth playing this Halloween season.

Corpse Party: Blood Drive - PS Vita Review

Corpse Party: Blood Drive is one of those titles that will undoubtedly get sold short because of its middling visuals and sometimes slow pacing. However, that would be selling short the generally excellent writing and sense of tension that permeates the atmosphere throughout.

Hunt the Wumpus - Retro Reflections

Seeing as that Halloween is fast coming up on us, I wanted to do something other than just talk about recent games that came out designed to scare players into submission. I wanted to reflect on what was my first horror game ever, Hunt the Wumpus.

Halo 5: Guardians - Xbox One Review

Halo 5: Guardians brings an intense level of 60fps action to a beloved franchise not seen in years. After the struggle that was the story in Halo 4, Halo 5: Guarding tries, and largely succeeds at bringing some semblance of order to one of the most beloved gaming franchises on the planet. Combining blazingly fast action with challenging gunplay, Guardians is a high-octane adventure that is all climax which spills brilliantly over into the new Arena and Warzone game modes. Hold onto your helmets folks, because you are in for the ride that you deserve.

Minecraft: Story Mode - Episode 1: The Order of the Stone - Xbox One Review

Minecraft: Story Mode - Episode 1: The Order of the Stone feels somewhat like a prologue - an episode helped to set a rather unique table. By and large, Story Mode works, but it lacks some of the punch found in other Telltale titles to date.

In preparation for the arrival of Level 5’s Yo-Kai Watch, a demo has hit the Nintendo eShop allowing players to finally get a taste of this JRPG that has been out in Japan for ages. Finally coming out in not very long now for the rest of the world, Yo-Kai Watch is looking good with its own spin on the JRPG style.

Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden - 3DS Review

Dragon Ball Z has managed to be maintain its popularity for quite a long time, with numerous movies, television episodes and games. The quality of the games has been all over the place in terms of quality. Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden falls somewhere in the middle between the best and worst extremes, establishing itself as a solid if unspectacular fighting experience.

Dungeon Defenders II - PS4 Preview

Unlike its original creation of Dungeon Defenders, Trendy Entertainment’s Dungeon Defenders 2 is taking a much different approach to development with it’s Tower Defense Action RPG. They have been leveraging a long-running Alpha in order to make sure to fully incorporate feedback from players with lots of testing and modifications. Dungeon Defenders 2 is making its way over from the PC to Sony’s PlayStation 4 in order to include a whole different set of players while moving closer to a final product.

Blue Microphones SnowBall iCE USB Microphone - Hardware Review

Headphone microphones are nice for when a person is sitting alone playing online or recording within the comfort of their living room or study. But when there’s more than one person involved it can get mildly awkward to setup multiple headphones on a console or even on a computer or laptop for everyone to be heard properly without massive feedback. It’s in times like these that an actual dedicated microphone comes in handy and the SnowBall iCE USB Microphone from Blue is more than up to the task.

Animal Gods - PC Review

Every now and again something comes around that simply takes your breath away because the sheer beauty of the experience. Animal Gods is no different with its soft art styles and intriguing environments. Designed as a top down Action Adventure, explore the realms of the fallen gods in the shoes of Thistle who journeys to set them free. Sometimes though, you need more than that to make the game as a whole work.

The Witch and the Hundred Knight: Revival Edition coming in March 2016

We were fans of The Witch and the Hundred Knight when it first released on PS3, so it is interesting to see the title getting a fresh look for the PlayStation 4.

Black Mass - Movie Review

Some movies are advertised a lot but when I watch them I wonder why. “Black Mass” is one of them. The story is about a gangster who makes a deal with an FBI agent in order to bring down the Italian mafia in Boston during the seventies. At first I thought the movie’s problem was going to be Depp’s make up but I was wrong. In fact, Depp looking like a vampire makes sense because he is called “Whitey”, which probably means he has some sort of rare skin condition. On the other hand, the movie suffers due to a lack of focus, creativity and cohesion.

Sublevel Zero - PC Review

Sublevel Zero is an interesting mix, because it takes the action genre and plugs in some very familiar roguelike elements to create an experience that stands out from the crowd. While this helps the experience to stand out from other action titles, there are still some aspects of the title that I found somewhat lacking.

Transformers: Devastation - PS4 Review

PlatinumGames knows action gaming and their latest offering with Transformers: Devastation is arguably their most entertaining yet. Admittedly, the experience is not as long or as deep as some other titles out there, but the look and feel of the show shines through and the end result is a title that I found impossible to put down until I had won. And then I started to play again.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below - PS4 Review

When comparing Square’s Final Fantasy and Enix’s Dragon Quest, it could more often than not be said that the Square side of the marriage is a lot more experimental with its series. Having seemingly come out of nowhere, the Dragon Quest series has been given a different spin on things by Tecmo Koei’s Omega Force not unlike what they did with Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda when they created Hyrule Warriors. Unlike The Legend of Zelda however, Dragon Quest’s newest entry might look like a Warriors title, but it is actually something more akin to a JRPG with some Warriors elements. This is Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below.

Persona 4: Dancing All Night - PS Vita Review

Many were skeptical when Persona 4: Dancing All Night was announced. Without a doubt, Persona 4 has proven to be the most marketable game in the long-running series to date, as evidenced by some of the chances taken with it. The original game was a hit (and awesome). However, Persona 4 Arena and Ultimax proved that the likable cast of characters could carry the series beyond just its RPG roots. Dancing All Night simply reinforces that notion.

Team17 signs Lilith's first-person Allison Road

When Silent Hills came to an unfortunate and screeching halt, gamers were left understandably bummed by its unexpected exit. Then Allison Road started to trickle out into social media, building up a storm of support for having a very similar aesthetic and approach in its demo footage. That makes this news so exciting for horror fans.

Forza Motorsport 6 - Xbox One Review

Forza Motorsport brings what you would expect to the table: lots of cars and tracks, gorgeous weather and plenty of little hooks to keep you coming back for more. The racing itself has not advance much, but it still makes for a solid experience with several options to help everyone find their ideal way to experience the game.

Samurai Warrior 4-II (Part 2) - Play Time

So we recently took a look at some gameplay footage provided by Pierre-Yves on this game. I thought I would share out some of mine. The Martian - Movie Review

“The Martian” is about an astronaut who, after an accident, is left alone on the surface of Mars and struggles to survive. The main idea reminded me of “Cast Away” but this is nowhere near as good. In fact, the movie has so many problems I’ll present them in a list.

Code: Realize - Guardian of Rebirth - PS Vita Review

Otome adventures are not the most popular of titles here in the US at this point, but we have seen more chances being taken by publishers of late, and I feel we are better for it. More options to choose from is a good thing, and the PlayStation Vita has proven to be a natural landing point for some of these niche titles. Code: Realize - Guardian of Rebirth is a stylish, entertaining visual novel that will not be for everyone, but for those looking for something different and deeper to delve into, you could do a lot worse than this offering.

NBA 2K16 - MyGM - Play Time

Early today I posted my review of the recently released NBA 2K16, and I was a huge fan of the title overall. There are however, as with any game, a handful of quirks to go along with that excellent gameplay and presentation. Here I have some Play Time videos from the franchise mode.

NBA 2K16 - PS4 Review

Another season of NBA action has descended upon us, and NBA 2K16 does a commendable job of simulating the sport while taking a few chances and doing something new along the way. While not everything pans out perfectly, this latest iteration in the series is still a solid game.

The Walk - Movie Review

“The Walk”’s trailer I saw consists of one scene: a young man approaches the edge of a skyscraper’s roof, stares up ahead at another skyscraper of equally immense height, then climbs on a metal beam stretching over the void and balances on one leg. Without any words you can tell he intends to try something unimaginable. The skyscrapers are the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and the movie, based on a true story, takes place in 1974, when they had just been built.

Divinia Chronicles: Relics of Gan-Ti - PC Preview

Divinia Chronicles: Relics of Gan-Ti is an Indie Action RPG currently within Steam’s Early Access that was inspired by one of the best generations for the genre, the Super Nintendo (SNES). Put into the shoes of a young and apparently lazy man named Cyrus, players will get to explore a beautifully designed environment while tackling monsters with sword and a fairy’s magic. They’ll need everything they have as they move further along with our hero having possibly just put the entire world at risk. Ahhhhh the good old days!

Ascendant - PS4 Review

What do you get when you mash up a procedurally generated map like Zelda or Binding of Isaac, make it a 2-dimensional platform exploration game sort of like A Valley Without Wind, and then put in combos and air dashes from Guacamelee?  Ascendant is all of these things and more, and boy is it punishing.  The tutorial will teach you absolutely everything you need to know to get around, to survive and to succeed, and along the vein of Demon Souls, you can beat this game without a single upgrade if you have the situational awareness, reflexes, strategy and timing down pat.  For the rest of us lesser mortals, though, you are going to need every last bit of health you can scrounge up, parry just about anything that comes anywhere near you, and get the best weapon you can RNG into your hot little hands.

Cataegis: The White Wind - PC Review

Older gamers that started early will forever remember the times of the NES and prior in which games were “hard”. These games were hard in the manner that required perfect memorization of enemy types, moves, and stage layouts in order to make it over in one piece. Or at least try to. Cataegis: The White Wind brings back these harder days of old fitting in nicely with Contra, Castlevania, and Ninja Gaiden for one of the hardest gaming experiences that I’ve had in a long time.
