Memorable Music in Gaming #51

This week's Memorable Music features games with techno and metal done well enough to elicit various reactions during gameplay.

Need for Speed II (PC) - Main Menu

Rom Di Prisco is one of those unsung heroes of the gaming world. This track right here is one of his best contributions to the industry, even when I take off my rose-tinted glasses and assess it objectively.

Post-Underground gamers might not remember, but the earlier NFS titles were all about that techno EDM rage. Each track was better than the last… and this main menu music was one of the first to kickstart that identity!

Need For Speed 2 SE Soundtrack - Main Menu (HD 1080p)

Final Doom (PS1) - Geryon

What would a kettle sound like in hell… is a thought I’m pretty sure didn’t enter anyone’s head.

Yet Geryon is the definitive answer to that unsettling inquiry.

Final Doom (PSX) Music - Track 07 (Geryon)

DOOM (PC) - Rip & Tear

The DOOM games are the very embodiment of heavy metal, especially on the music front. Bobby Prince set the bar very high when he worked on the first 2 games; so much so that any tribute or remix only tries harder to out-rock the already rockin’ tunes.

I think Mick Gordon, the composer, is one of the best things to happen to the series. Never have I ever heard music that not only made my hairs stand… but added more!!

DOOM (2016) ost rip and tear

Wolfenstein the New Order - Deathshead’s Theme

To quote Simon Tam from Firefly, “this must be what going mad feels like”. So it should; this unadulterated cacophony of visceral auditory pain serves as the entrance music of the cutely-named General Deathshead after all.

Mick Gordon, you are a gorram genius!

Wolfenstein: The New Order OST - Deathshead (Extended)

Super Stickman Golf 2 (Mobile) - Pleased

It only makes sense to follow-up the previous with something from the opposite spectrum. In another article long ago, I said the Village theme from Grounseed was one of the best chill music in a video game.

“Pleased” here is a worthy contender for the #1 spot. I haven’t played the game yet but I love it for the vaporwave, immaculate appliance store muzak vibes.

Card-en-Ciel is Available September 25th on Nintendo Switch and Steam

INTI CREATES has announced that pre-purchases for their upcoming deckbuilding roguelite JRPG Card-en-Ciel are available today, September 25th on Nintendo Switch and Steam (PC). Pre-purchases on Nintendo Switch will get 10% off the price of the game, and pre-purchases on Steam will come with an exclusive bonus game, Divine Dynamo Flamefrit.

What is “Card-en-Ciel”?

Card-en-Ciel is a card-battling, roguelite RPG featuring over 300 unique cards and 50 vocal songs.
Players take control of Neon, a private detective who specializes in solving cases that take place in the virtual net. He must restore order to an in-development game that is under attack by countless characters leaking from other games across history.

Dive into virtual dungeons where each victory earn new cards to add to your deck, strengthen those cards, then take on the powerful protagonists of the invading games. Each card brings a new synergy to your deck, creating combos with each other and the special Muse cards, whose songs add new passive abilities that last for the entire battle.

Glitch your way to victory!

  • Pre-purchases for Card-en-Ciel, the new deckbuilding roguelite JRPG from INTI CREATES, are available today on Nintendo Switch and Steam!
  • Nintendo Switch pre-purchases will get 10% off the price of the game!
  • Pre-purchases on Steam include an exclusive bonus game: Divine Dynamo Flamefrit!
  • Don’t miss this chance to get Card-en-Ciel day 1 with these special offers!

Divine Dynamo Flamefrit is a 2D action homage to the games and anime of the 90s. Players control hero Yuto Hino in top-down action stages, and climb aboard the giant robot Flamefrit for first-person boss battles. Master both gameplay styles to restore peace to the fantasy realm of Hologard!

Divine Dynamo Flamefrit was originally created as a fictional title for the world of Card-en-Ciel, but after fan reaction to an April Fools’ teaser, it was decided to make it into a real game! Divine Dynamo Flamefrit will fully release on Steam (PC), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S|X at a later date to be announced.

However, fans who pre-purchase Card-en-Ciel on Steam will have a chance to get Flamefrit ahead of schedule!
